A fertility clinic’s in vitro fertilization (IVF) success rates are often a key indicator of that practice’s results in a major area of infertility treatment – and we recognize that many people often base their evaluation of a practice and its physicians on IVF success rates.
But numbers alone do not indicate the true picture of a clinic’s success. IVF success rates can be higher if a fertility practice is selective about which patients receive IVF: younger patients and those with a better prognosis will give a practice higher IVF success rates.
This is not Ember’s approach. Instead, we believe every patient deserves a chance to build a family with the treatment that is best for them under our guidance. We do not cherry-pick patients most likely to have success with IVF: we accept all patients, and welcome the harder cases that other clinics may have turned away.

What are IVF success rates?
The basic definition of IVF success rates is the percentage of women who achieve a live birth using the IVF procedure. Data for clinics are often available from public sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Typically, statistics are presented for different patient age groups and whether they used fresh or frozen embryos. Maternal age is one of the most important factors in fertility treatment success. Generally, the younger a woman is, the likelihood of successful treatment is statistically higher.
According to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), the chances that one IVF egg retrieval cycle will eventually result in a live birth are:
- 55.6% for women under 35.
- 40.8% for women aged 35-37.
- 26.8% for women aged 38-40.
- 12.6% for women aged 41-42.
- 3.9% for women aged 43 or more.
While it is very useful to have SART and CDC data to reference, there are some things patients should keep in mind when using any data as a yardstick to measure different clinics.
IVF success rates depend heavily on a patient’s age as shown above and individual health such as a patient’s weight, stress level, smoking status and more.
Fertility clinics can encourage most patients to go into IVF without completely considering other options. This could be good for a large number of IVF cases to build statistics on, but it is not good for patients who might have been able to conceive with other treatments, like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or ovarian simulation.
Another key factor in IVF success is the skill of the doctor, the clinical staff, and the IVF and andrology labs in performing IVF, with approaches varying for different individuals. Many patients do not realize that the laboratories’ role in IVF success is as important as the doctor’s.

For example, sometimes the best course of treatment is for a patient to go right to IVF. Other times, it is best to try more minimalistic interventions first to help a patient achieve pregnancy on their own.

There are many online prediction tools for IVF that help calculate a person’s chances of pregnancy after IVF. Each of them is based on different data and methodologies, and we recommend the one provided by and based on data reported to the CDC. Do remember that these are statistical methods and should only be used as a guide.
